At Schmooz, Social Media Marketing is kind of our thing. There’s a whole wide world out there that can be easily accessed with a Facebook post or Tweet. However, a lot of entrepreneurs struggle with social media, not realizing that it can be an untapped resource of growth and success.

Most of the time, the words “Social Media Marketing” seem daunting for those who haven’t explored the possibilities of a post, which is where we can come in to help. But, to get started, business owners need to see what effective social media actually looks like.

Frequent: It’s important to post often and in a timely manner. Followers are scrolling through their feeds at all hours of the day, and if you don’t remain consistent, there can be valuable space lost when you do post. Followers will lose interest if they don’t see something new from you at least every couple of days. Also, it matters what time of day you post too; usually, you want to aim for peak hours that people will be checking their feeds.

Relevant: Social media is an opportunity to build your brand identity and engage potential customers, so it’s best to focus on content that reflects what your target audience wants to see. One great example of this is Netflix – they do a great job interspersing their posts with details and inside jokes about movies and shows that are already interesting to their audience.

Engaging: When you post to social media, it’s an opportunity to interact directly with your target demographic. You don’t want to bombard them with details about your business all day – you also want to engage them. The best way to do this is a call to action, which can include asking your followers a question or prompting them to check out a link. There’s an algorithmic benefit as well - more your followers engage with you on social media, the more frequently you will appear in their feeds.

Personal: For entrepreneurs, we are our brand. When people follow you on social media, they aren’t just following a business; they are following you, which gives you the freedom to share details from your personal life. Carefully consider if you want to post pictures of your family, a trip that you’ve taken or videos of your pets and kids. You may or may not want be seen as just a business, but also as a person who followed their dream and started a company. This all depends on your brand and your brand audience. For a lot of businesses right now, it’s important to genuinely connect with the audience around personal interests, if not your personal life.

Effective social media is a combination of creative content, brand identity and personality. It’s important to have a plan in place and an idea of what can make your social media pages stand out from the rest of the feed.
