At Schmooz, we’re always looking for new and exciting opportunities to enhance our client’s digital marketing strategies. This means staying on top of what’s in the digital realm-- from tools to creating great content, to social media platforms that target specific demographics.

In this first part of a three-part series, we take a look at Quora, a forum-style search engine that’s been getting a lot of buzz! This is a great tool for businesses who want to create and share content that will have an impact.

You’ve probably heard or seen the name Quora around the internet for quite some time now, but have you ever stopped to find out what it really is and if it’s worth your while? We love offering advice on the Schmooz blog, and this post is no different, so read on!

Quora is a search engine with a Q&A-style forum where, yep, you guessed it: you ask, it answers. The forum search engine was founded in 2009 by Charlie Cheever and Adam D’Angelo, who left the chain of command at Facebook to create the online knowledge receptacle.

To use Quora, you can create an account or simply sign in with your Facebook or Gmail account. You’ll have full access to the site’s content, and a plethora of information as soon as you submit your question. It will ask you about your interests to cater specifically to you. From there, you can choose who to follow, if you have a certain interest in their work, and that’s it! It’s very simple, and easy to use. Your next step is to ask your question and receive your answer.

The knowledgeable answers come from the users of the platform. While you can question the reliability of these users, they come from a pool of individuals that have the same concerns and questions as you, so there’s an element of trust at play. With every super-interesting Q&A forum, there are ratings from the viewers stating the reliability they found from the anonymous answer. Who better to listen to than someone that has gone through the process you’re about to?

Here’s what we mean:

Even though the tools are quite different, a question arises: can Quora avoid the same fate as Wikipedia? That is, with exponential growth of popularity and increase in content from various users, how can you be sure that the answers found will be reliable?

Have you tried Quora? If so, we’d love to hear what you think of this user-generated search engine! Share your thoughts in the comments below.
