Maximize Small Spaces: Desk Deco

Sometimes your desk is the only space you have to decorate, but here at Schmooz, we like taking small spaces (or small businesses!) and strategizing to make them work. Desk accessories can maximize your space and make you feel at home. You can pick up some of these things at places like Ikea or Muji, or make your own (we’re all about DIY!).

Here are some ideas to get you started:

Extra storage spaces
Maximize your surface area by minimizing stacks of paper, books or magazines on your desk by having one or a couple of magazine files or file trays. Keep all of your pens and pencils in one place with an unused mug or small pails on your desk. All of these storage units come in all sorts of colours.

Plants
Nothing brings life to your desk like a green companion in the form of a plant, or flower. Low-maintenance plants such as succulents, prickly pear cactuses, or aloe kokedamas plants don’t take up too much room on your desk. They also do not need that much sunlight, and require very little water. To spruce up any flowers on your desk, use other empty vessels like mason jars, or bottles. Flowerpots and the other options of containers can easily be painted on, or drawn on with a marker to give it that custom charm. If you kill plants (we won’t tell!) Ikea sells some cute fake ones.

Nothing like a picture of the ones you love to motivate your work! Frame a nice moment in your life like a birthday, anniversary or something that makes you laugh to keep your spirits lifted during the day, and potentially start a conversation with your co-workers. At the end of the day, it’s about making sure the space you work in is somewhere you want to be. If you’re working for long parts of the day, you might as well make it a place that encourages creativity and organization!
