As a busy woman juggling my family life and professional life, I was apprehensive to learn about the fast-paced, ever-evolving world of social media. Sure, I may use social media casually, but from my perspective, the various social media channels seemed confusing and hard to navigate. For the longest time, I dismissed social media as a passing trend and didn’t bother to get involved.
But I’m so glad I did.
What I’ve found from taking the plunge into the social media scene is that the world is much more connected than I could have imagined. Professionals can apply for jobs in other countries, families and friends can feel a sense of closeness even if they are miles apart and new pals are made online without ever meeting in person. And all of this is happening online!
Our lives are so fast-paced today, but we are able to connect to so many more businesses and people both locally and globally. I know we’ve all heard it before, but the world is a smaller place because of social media and the internet. And, frankly, I find this exciting!
What I Learned When I Took the Plunge into Social Media
I wear many hats: I’m a wife, mother, friend, writer and chef. Unsurprisingly, social media is able to support me in many ways.
As a wife, I can go online to anyone of the amazing travel websites and plan a last-minute trip for myself and my husband. I source recommendations and travel tips from my friends on Facebook by asking them which resorts and hotels they’ve visited and about their experiences. I imagine the travel industry are equally as excited about this exposure! How refreshing to be able to get an honest opinion in a matter of seconds.
As a mother, without even getting up from my desk, I can order my kid’s back-to-school supplies online. I don’t have to waste my precious time standing in endless lines at stores! I get to save the hassle and spend more time with my children. It’s a win-win!
As a writer, I was able to network with other people on LinkedIn and search for a job. By posting my resume in various places and by making connections, I managed to secure a writing job for Schmooz Media after seeing a job posting online.
As a chef, I am able to develop recipes by reviewing appealing pictures of food on Instagram, which provide me with creative inspiration. I have joined many cooking groups to share questions and provide answers. My followers post comments on the photos I share and I get honest feedback from an audience of like-minded people instantly.
I use social media for both my professional and personal interests, including: networking and keeping in touch; reaching out to friends, family and colleagues; sharing information, and, most importantly maintaining meaningful relationships. And social media can benefit not just people like me, but local businesses as well. I use social media for so many things that I truly forget what life was like without it!
