HOLIDAY LIES

We’ve all been there. No matter the event, celebrations with friends and family always come with a certain amount of responsibility and pressure.

While we at Schmooz always condone honesty and open communication, we always understand that the holidays are a special time when tensions run high and keeping the peace is essential to enjoy ourselves to the fullest.

Lie #1

Although we always try to shop local, sometimes you find that perfect gift online. And sometimes you’ve done your shopping last minute. And sometimes Canada Post is really busy in the weeks leading up to Christmas. But more often? The gift was never bought, the idea never hatched—there’s just been too much else to do. Sorry!

Tell this #holidaylie if: you have an understanding co-worker or someone truly believes that it’s the thought that counts.

Lie #2

Friends who cook for us are some of our favourite friends ever. Ditto for dads, aunts and well-meaning teens. But with so many dishes to prepare, sometimes veggies are undercooked, dishes are over-salted and well… things burn.

Tell this #holidaylie if: the chef deserves an A for effort only.

Lie #3

The holiday spirit usually makes people cheery, but in catching up with long-lost family and friends, you might notice some subtle critiques about your life and your choices. (No, Stephen, we’re still not ready to have kids!) While it’s important to know your boundaries and make smart and safe decisions, the holidays are a time to kick back and relax. You work hard - have that second (or third) drink. It’s your choice how to react to the raised eyebrows - no one has to know.

Tell this #holidaylie if: if you need to not say: “mind your business!”

Lie #4:

Holidays are the time of food. For those of us lucky enough to have big holiday meals, we know that there is always too much - who were they expecting to come for dinner, the entire neighbourhood? You may feel drawn to eat another turkey leg or, let’s be honest, another tray for of devilled eggs. But a post-meal nap of the couch is less luxurious than it sounds). Remember: doggie bags and leftovers > second helpings.

Tell this #holidaylie if: you’ve already booked your post-holidays flight to Cuba.
