Creation: Seeing Things from a New Perspective

An earlier posting promised future blogs about art, culture, travel and new ideas. Today, that goal will begin to be fulfilled by discussing the Chagall Art Museum in Nice, France. The Chagall Museum is fascinating for many reasons, one of which includes the fact that the museum was erected while Marc Chagall was still alive. He was able to choose many of the gallery features, and compose an art mosaic (pictured below) on site. After learning that Chagall was involved in this process, unlike many artists who only "get" such a museum posthumously, I wondered about his experience building this -- knowing that he would eventually pass away, knowing that he had reached this level of fame, knowing that people would know he was alive and part of the decision making when building the museum. Did he make decisions hyper- aware of these things, or did he simply follow his heart and his gut?

“If I create from the heart, nearly everything works; if from the head, almost nothing.”
Marc Chagall

This insightful quote does grant us some understanding into what Chagall's thinking must have been - but art is always challenging and fascinating because our unique understanding of an artwork is likely very different than what the artist was thinking during creation. This is not to say that people are wrong in their interpretations, but we ultimately form ideas through our own experiences. Is an artist's goal to be clear and transparent about his or her creation, or is it appealing to be mysterious? Perhaps it is neither, one or all of these things. Perhaps it doesn't matter if people are able to connect with art or connect with others over art. Perhaps my own insights are completely wrong. To me, this is what makes art or creation wonderful.

Chagall Life

So what does any of this have to do with Schmooz and online content writing? Schmooz is in the fortunate position to have new clients and new challenges each and every day. To us, this is a sign that we are helping companies reach their goals and targets. Beyond that, we know that we are collaborating and creating. We know that some people will have a different point of view, or interpretation about their company and their vision. As the Chief Executive Schmoozer, I know how important it is to delve past my own assumptions, to listen, to see, to observe. In order to create and serve clients to the best of our ability, we at Schmooz have to be open to new perspectives. We also have to recognize that someone might interpret us differently than we intended.

I think it is important to take the time to step back from clients and customers to remind oneself of the world of ideas that surround us. This ultimately allows me to bring better service and ideas to businesses. I will always strive to read new books, to see new art and to try things outside of my comfort zone so I can continue experiencing new perspectives.

Thanks to the Chagall Museum for reminding me to celebrate life, new points of view and taking a step back.
