As you may or may not know, Instagram is making changes to its algorithm feed. Our advice? DON'T ask you followers to turn on notifications.
What the changes are:
Instead of Instagram users seeing images in chronological order, they will be showed images that they are most likely to like, based on past behaviour of likes and comments. This is similar (but not identical) to changes that Facebook has made in past years.
Why this sounds scary:
Many people are concerned that other users will no longer see their updates. Could this majorly effect marketing on the platform? Will anyone even see my images?? Should I bother posting on Instagram???
Why it's not scary... and even potentially good:
Instagram users who already like and comment on your content, the ones truly care about your business, will still see your content, as their behaviour has "told" Instagram that they should still be regularly receiving your content.
What you shouldn't do:
Do not ask your followers to turn on notifications. Please. Your followers will get a pesky notification on their phones each time you post anything, and will get sick of your updates. They might even unfollow you. Instead, up your marketing game by doing more to encourage engagement. Use hashtags to your advantage. Run contests. You can do it.
What's next?:
For what comes next in terms of keeping engagement strong and follower levels growing, Schmooz will keep a close eye on how this algorithm change is effecting brands over the next few weeks. We will be revisiting our clients' Instagram strategies to recommend slight tweaks to your responsibilities on the platform, including increased hashtag use (making your content easily searchable) and more engagement on behalf of your brand with your followers.
