Am I a Mompreneur now?

Regardless of the title, I’m proud to Join the Ranks of Moms who are also Entrepreneurs!

I am a lot of things: I am a business owner, entrepreneur, a boss, a client, a wife, a sister, and now — I am a mom.

Almost four years ago, I started my own company and since then I have been able hire full and part-time employees, adding to my growing company. Now my husband and I have begun a new adventure - called parenthood - with the arrival of our daughter.

As a new mother and business owner, I find myself now having recently joined the force that has become widely recognized as, “mompreneurs”: women who balance their time and energy between their entrepreneurial and parenting goals, responsibilities, joys, tribulations, and challenges.

Resenting the Labels

For a long time, I resented the labeling of “Mompreneur” because I believe it conflates what are two very separate things into one, which in turn diminishes the importance of each unique part of one’s life. I believe that there are lots of different parts of me.

Grateful for Support and Other Women’s Experience

While I don’t feel resentment anymore, I’m no longer sure how I feel about the term Mompreneur. I now feel grateful to have been welcomed to join a group of very strong, capable women who understand the unique experience that is running a women-led company while having children to care for. I am grateful for their experience, their knowledge and their successes. I am grateful for books like “The Fifth Trimester,” created for the working mom and which dedicates a whole chapter to the question: What If I’m My Own Boss? and to “I Know How She Does It,” which explains the schedules of high-income working moms and entrepreneurs.

Strong Women Everywhere

Joining other female entrepreneurs who are strong and capable, whether a mom, pet mom or someone not interested in being a mom, has always fueled me to achieve more. When I am in a room of strong women who are making their dreams come true as intrapreneurs or entrepreneurs, I feel so much hope and motivation. I do not believe I am a better mom because I’m an entrepreneur or a better entrepreneur because I am a mom; instead, I believe that I have actively made choices that have to lead me here and it is a place I am so happy to be.

Change is Inevitable

I have learned that things will inevitably keep changing in my life and that people will define me however they choose. For now, I am proud to say that I have brought into the world both a business and a child. If that makes me a mompreneur to you, then so be it! What I care about is that regardless of gender, marital status, having children or not having children, women and men have choice and options to spend their time the way they want to.
